If you’re planning a visit to France this year, there’s one region you can’t afford to miss. Here we delve deep into the sights of Normandy and seek out the best local attractions for your group.

Life’s beach

Located in the heart of Normandy, Calvados is a restful region famous for its beaches, seaside resorts, and well-known historical sites. Visiting groups have the luxury of enjoying many attractions, starting with the tiny town of Bayeux, which is built around the cathedral of Notre-Dame. It’s also home to the 200-foot long Bayeux Tapestry - a world famous masterpiece whose cartoon like scenes tell the tale of William the Conqueror's expedition to England in the 11th century. Also in Calvados, you’ll find stud farms where they breed and train famous racehorses, and during the season you can go to the races, which take place every Sunday at Deauville. The glamorous resort of Deauville is home to the rich and famous, and is a thriving spot for luxury hotels, casinos, golf courses, and polo grounds. Its twin city, Trouville - separated from Deauville by the Touques river - is a more sedate fishing village. Here you can take a leisurely stroll with your group through the colourful stalls in the markets or along the quays, watching the fishermen and admiring the artists painting. Caen Village is also popular with groups as it’s home to the Caen Memorial Museum, which charts the historic journey of the 20th century, from the Second World War to the world at the time of the Cold War. There is also a ‘D-Day tour’ available for groups where you can visit both the D-Day Landing beaches and the Caen Memorial Museum . On the border of Normandy, your group might like to explore the pretty countryside. You could cycle, walk, or travel by horseback along the coast, or even hire a canoe and discover the landscapes in the Orne Valley or in Vire. And for those of you who are looking for more demanding activities on your trip, you could take up hang-gliding or windsurfing. To find out more, contact Calvados Tourism on the details below.
