Dress to impress
One of the most impressive castles in England and part of the beautiful Northumberland coast is Bamburgh Castle. Sitting high up on its rocky outcrop, it dominates the surrounding landscape with stunning views over unspoilt beaches to the Farne Islands, Lindisfarne, and the Cheviots. The castle was once home to the Kings of Northumbria, and was bought by the great industrialist Lord Armstrong in the early 1890’s, where he created his vision of what an English castle should look like. The castle has also played a role in some famous films over the years, including El Cid, Ivanhoe, Mary Queen of Scots, and more recently, Elizabeth, making it a fascinating place to explore.

Time travel
Take your group back in time at Segedunum Roman Fort Museum, which combines the excavated remains of the Fort with reconstructions and exciting hands-on museum displays. The museum displays more than 700 finds from the Fort and uses the latest technology to show what life was like for soldiers who lived in Roman Britain. The history of the site after the decline of the Roman Empire is also explored. Segedunum contains a number of permanent galleries and exhibitions too. A new discovery
Another place where you can learn more about the past is at Discovery Museum - the North East’s biggest free museum celebrating the history, diversity, and achievements of the region. Turbinia, once the fastest ship in the world, takes pride of place at the centre of the museum, while Mauretania, one of the most famous ships built on the Tyne can also be seen. You’ll find The Soldier’s Life display - a regimental collection that brings to life the army experience over 200 years, and highlights from Tyne & Wear Museums’ costume collection can be seen in the Fashion Works gallery. Group visitors can then get hands-on in the Science Maze - a buzzing interactive zone, before relaxing with a coffee in the café. The museum is open from Monday to Saturday, 10am to 5pm, and Sunday, 2pm to 5pm.

Great tradition
One of the largest and most impressive of English medieval castles, Raby Castle, in County Durham, Northumbria, provides a wonderful day out. Groups can wonder at its towers, turrets, embattled walls, interiors and artworks from the Medieval, Regency and Victorian periods. You can also see the herds of deer roaming the surrounding parkland; enjoy the ornamental gardens; relax in the tearooms and be tempted by traditional and unusual gifts and souvenirs in the gift shop. The castle was built in the mid 14th century, and has been the home of Lord Barnard's family since 1626.
